Description : The purpose of this course is to introduce students to some of the techniques used in the study of aquatic insect behaviour and ecology.  A variety of aquatic insects will be studied.  Background information will be presented through evening lectures, discussion sessions and student seminars.  Students (in pairs) will then select an organism to study, identify a research question, design and implement a set of experiments and analyze the resulting data.  Six weeks after the end of the course, each student will be expected to submit a final report for grading.

Research paper 40%

(Note:  a passing grade on the research paper is required to pass the field course module.)
Assignment(s) :

Seminar presentation (~20 minutes) based on pre-assigned reading.
Field notebook
Quizzes on experimental design, statistical analysis, interpretation of behavioural data.

Research paper (10-15 pages) based on data collected for personal research project (due 12 July 2010).
