| Description : | A two-week field course based at the Churchill Northern Studies Centre, Manitoba (http://www.churchillscience.ca/). Churchill is a diverse region for ecological study, being located at the junction of the boreal, arctic, and Hudson Bay biomes. The first week of the course includes exploration of terrestrial, freshwater, and marine arctic environments, as well as an overview of collecting methods used to survey biodiversity in these environments. The study of invertebrate biodiversity is emphasized. Evening lectures provide background on arctic ecology and the use of cutting-edge genetic techniques for studying biodiversity. Weather permitting, excursions will include a “tundra buggy” tour and kayaking with the belugas. During the second week, students conduct independent research projects. Students are offered the opportunity to employ the tool of DNA barcoding in their biodiversity projects. This course provides an excellent opportunity to visit a spectacular sub-arctic locality; to learn about arctic ecology, arctic biodiversity, and DNA barcoding methods; and to conduct an independent research project. | ||
